How much does duct cleaning cost?

Why do published averages disagree so much?
Because they measure different things. The ~$389 figure records what homeowners actually paid, mostly on single-system jobs Single source. The $450–$1,000 figure is a per-system quoting convention, and we read it as covering a complete cleaning of one system including the air handler, blower and evaporator coil — a reading we set out and defend on the main cost page, because EPA’s sentence itself defines no scope. Neither figure is wrong. A price without a stated scope is what is wrong.
Is the price per house or per system?
Per heating and cooling system. That is the trade’s standard unit, and it is how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) both frame their figures. Count furnaces or air handlers, not thermostats — two thermostats can control one zoned system.
Why is that $29 special so cheap?
Because it usually buys a fraction of the job. In the Washington State Attorney General’s case that ended in $10 million of penalties, specials advertised at $29–$55 frequently produced bills over $1,000, and the ads omitted that only half the system was included Verified fact.
What does mold cost to deal with?
We will not give you a number, and we would treat anyone who does with caution. Published “mold” figures span $500 to $10,000 across eight sources Sources disagree, and they describe whole-house remediation rather than a duct cleaning line item.
Should I be buying this at all?
Often, no. EPA recommends duct cleaning as needed rather than on a schedule, and names three conditions that justify it: substantial visible mold on hard duct surfaces, vermin infestation, or debris actually blowing into rooms from supply registers. Routine dust is not one of them.
Would the money do more somewhere else on the same ductwork?
