Is air duct cleaning worth it?
It depends
It is worth it when you have identified a specific problem inside the system: substantial visible mold growth on hard duct surfaces, a rodent or insect infestation, or debris heavy enough that particles are actually being released into rooms from the supply registers. Those are the three situations the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies. It is not automatically worth it because several years have passed, because a coupon arrived, or because the ducts hold ordinary settled dust.
The honest answer, without the sales pitch
Air duct cleaning is a real service that does a real thing. A competent crew puts the duct system under negative pressure, agitates the interior surfaces with brushes or compressed-air tools, and collects what comes loose. When there is a genuine quantity of debris in there, that work removes it.
The problem is the reason most homeowners are given for buying it. The marketing argument is that ducts accumulate dust, that this dust circulates, and that removing it makes the air in the house healthier. The first part is true. The second and third parts are not supported by the evidence EPA describes. EPA reports that studies do not conclusively show that particle levels in homes rise because of dirty air ducts, or that they fall after cleaning, and points out that much of the dirt in ducts adheres to duct surfaces rather than entering the living space.
So the question is not really “is duct cleaning worth it.” It is “worth it for what?” As a fix for a specific, visible, identified condition inside the system, it is often the right call and occasionally the only call. As a periodic tune-up bought on faith, it is money spent on a benefit nobody has been able to demonstrate.

What EPA actually says, and what it does not
EPA’s consumer guidance, Should You Have the Air Ducts in Your Home Cleaned?, is the anchor document for this entire subject. It was first issued in 1997 and the page was last updated on February 19, 2026. Here is its position, stated accurately rather than selectively.
It does not recommend routine cleaning
EPA’s guidance is to clean as needed rather than on a schedule. That single sentence is the reason this page exists, and it is the sentence most contractor pages leave out.
It names three conditions
Cleaning should be considered if there is substantial visible mold growth inside hard-surface ducts such as sheet metal or on other components of the HVAC system; if ducts are infested with vermin, meaning rodents or insects; or if ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and particles are actually being released into the home from the supply registers. EPA attaches a condition to all three: the underlying cause has to be corrected, or the problem will recur.
It says the health benefit has not been demonstrated
EPA’s wording is direct: Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems.
It also states that there is no evidence that a light amount of household dust or other particulate matter in air ducts poses any risk to your health.
It says the deciding step is a visual inspection
EPA’s practical advice for a homeowner who is unsure is to look, or have someone look, inside the ducts. If the inspection shows no large deposits of dust or mold, cleaning is probably unnecessary. That is a cheap test with a definite answer, and it is the step we recommend over almost anything else on this page.
What EPA does not say
It does not say duct cleaning is a scam. It does not say ducts never need cleaning. It does not publish a recommended interval. It does not say that cleaning is harmful in itself, though it does warn against specific practices — steam and other moisture-introducing methods should never be used on ductwork, and EPA, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), NAIMA and SMACNA all decline to recommend the routine use of sealants to encapsulate contaminants in any type of duct.
The fairness point most articles skip
This cuts both ways
EPA’s statement that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems applies to the entire service category. It is not a comment on discount operators as opposed to careful ones. A NADCA-member firm doing a full-scope cleaning to industry standard is inside the same statement as a $39 coupon crew.
This matters because the usual way this line gets quoted implies the opposite: that duct cleaning would be health-protective if only you hired the right company. Nothing in the evidence supports that reading. Hiring a careful contractor buys you a job actually done, a system not damaged, and a price that matches the work. It does not buy you a demonstrated health outcome, because no one has demonstrated one.
We say this deliberately, because it costs us the easy version of the story. The easy version is “duct cleaning is fine, just avoid the scammers.” That version sells certification and it flatters the industry, but it misstates what the evidence shows. What certification genuinely does and does not guarantee is worth understanding on its own terms — just not as a health claim.
Why “a waste of money” is half right
Search for this topic and you will find a lot of people who have concluded duct cleaning is a waste of money. They are half right, and it is worth being precise about which half.
The half that is right: bought as routine maintenance, on a schedule, to make the air cleaner, it is spending against a benefit that has not been demonstrated. There is no published interval. There is no measured reduction in household particle levels. There is no proven health effect. If that is why you were about to buy it, the skeptics have the better of the argument.
The half that is wrong: a service is not a waste of money because its routine version is unjustified. A duct full of construction debris, a nest of rodents, or a system that visibly throws particles into a room are real conditions with a real remedy, and that remedy is mechanical cleaning. Calling the whole category worthless leaves those homeowners with nowhere to go.
There is also a third thing sometimes hiding inside “waste of money,” which is not about the service at all but about the transaction. Advertised specials as low as $29 have been the documented entry point for bills exceeding $1,000, according to the Washington State Attorney General’s robocall case against several duct cleaning companies. When people say they got ripped off, that is frequently what happened: not a useless service, but a bait price and an on-site upsell. That is a hiring problem, and it is solvable.
What duct cleaning genuinely can do
- Remove loose debris from the accessible parts of the system. Supply and return runs, the plenum, registers and grilles, and — if the contract includes them — the blower and the evaporator coil. That is a real physical result you can verify by looking.
- Clear an actual obstruction. Construction debris, a collapsed liner’s worth of material, or nesting material restricts airflow. Removing it restores it.
- Remove the material a vermin infestation left behind, once the infestation itself has been dealt with.
- Answer a question. A contractor with a camera in your plenum can tell you what is in there. Sometimes the honest outcome of that visit is “you do not need this.”
The limitations are as important as the capability. Access is the constraint: a crew can only clean what it can reach, which is why NADCA itself warns that extremely cheap whole-house specials often cover only limited portions of the system and may exclude the air handler, blower, coils, registers, or the access openings needed to do the work at all. A cleaning that skips the coil and blower has skipped the parts where moisture and debris actually accumulate together. Fiberglass duct board and fiberglass-lined duct are harder still, because the surface is porous and mechanical cleaning cannot restore it the way it can restore bare sheet metal.
What duct cleaning cannot do
- It cannot prevent health problems. That is EPA’s finding, and it applies regardless of who performs the work.
- It cannot fix a moisture problem. Water that reached the ducts once will reach them again. Cleaning removes the consequence, not the cause.
- It cannot rescue contaminated fiberglass duct liner. EPA’s position is that once fiberglass liner is contaminated with mold, cleaning is not sufficient to prevent regrowth, and wet or moldy insulated duct should be removed and replaced rather than cleaned.
- It cannot be substituted for filtration. A clean duct with an ineffective filter is refilled by the same air that dirtied it.
- It cannot seal leaks. Duct sealing is a different service with a different purpose. Do not accept one when you asked about the other.
- It cannot be made “sanitizing” on demand. A small number of products are EPA-registered for the interior of bare sheet metal ducts. None are registered for fiberglass duct board or fiberglass-lined ducts, and applying a general-purpose disinfectant inside an HVAC system whose label does not specifically authorize HVAC use is a use inconsistent with labeling under federal pesticide law. EPA also notes that little research has been conducted on the effectiveness of most biocides and ozone used inside ducts.
What usually addresses the real complaint better
Almost everyone arriving at this question has an underlying complaint: too much dust, a smell, symptoms, or a vague sense that the system is dirty. Here is where the money usually does more.

Does the price change the answer?
Not much, but it is worth knowing what you are being quoted against.

The gap between roughly $389 and $450–$1,000 is not a disagreement about the market. It is two different products: what people actually paid for a typical single-system job, versus a per-system quote range for full-scope cleaning that includes the air handler, coils and blower. The reason price does not change the verdict much: a service with no demonstrated benefit is not made worthwhile by being cheap, and a service that fixes a real problem is worth a fair price. What price does tell you is whether the quote is serious. A number far below the published ranges is usually buying access to your house rather than paying for the work.
Common misconceptions
“Dirty ducts are making my house dusty”
Possible, but not the default. EPA reports that much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space, and that studies do not conclusively show household particle levels rising because of dirty ducts. The exception is the visible one: if debris is coming out of the registers, the ducts are the source and you can see it.
“The industry recommends every three to five years, so that must be the standard”
That figure circulates widely, but it is industry guidance rather than a finding from evidence, and our fact base contains no government or academic source establishing any interval. We are not going to invent one to fill the gap.
“A sanitizing treatment finishes the job properly”
Registration limits make this claim much narrower than it sounds. Read the registration status of duct sanitizing products before agreeing to one, particularly if your system contains fiberglass duct board or lined duct.
“They found mold, so I had to act fast”
NADCA — the industry’s own trade association — tells homeowners that being told mold or another dangerous substance is present without a proper inspection is a common red flag. Ask to see it. Ask for a sample to be confirmed by a laboratory, which EPA puts at roughly $50. Same-day pressure is the part to distrust, not the possibility of mold itself.
“A new build has clean ducts”
Construction is precisely the scenario that fills a duct system with debris. Whether it matters depends on whether the system ran unsealed during the work — which is a question for an inspection, not an assumption in either direction.
