Do I Need Duct Cleaning?

Direct answer

Most homes do not need duct cleaning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends cleaning as needed rather than on a schedule, and identifies three conditions that justify it: substantial visible mold growth on hard duct surfaces, a vermin infestation, or debris heavy enough that particles are actually being released into rooms. This tool asks seven questions to work out whether any of those apply to you, and tells you the next step either way.

What this tool is not

This is a decision aid, not a diagnosis. It does not and cannot identify mold, diagnose a fault in your heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment, or say anything about anyone’s health or symptoms. It has never seen your house. What it does is sort your situation against published EPA guidance and point you at the next sensible step — which is very often a visual inspection rather than a purchase.

Do you actually need duct cleaning?

Seven questions. Nothing is stored, and there is no sales step at the end. This tool does not diagnose mould, heating and cooling faults, or any medical condition — it points you to the right next step.

  1. Can you see substantial mould-like growth on the inside of hard duct surfaces or on other parts of the heating and cooling equipment?

    Substantial visible growth, not a smudge or a dusty grille. Visual inspection alone cannot confirm mould; laboratory analysis can.

  2. Is there evidence that rodents or insects have got into the duct system?

    Droppings, nesting material, a persistent animal smell, or a technician showing you an infestation.

  3. Is debris actually blowing out of your supply registers when the system runs?

    Particles visibly released into rooms — not simply dust settled on the register cover.

  4. Has the duct system been wet, or is there an unresolved moisture, humidity or condensation problem?

    Water intrusion, a leaking coil or drain pan, or duct insulation that has been damp.

  5. Has the home had major construction or renovation with the heating and cooling system running or unsealed?

    Drywall sanding, demolition or sawing dust drawn into an unsealed system.

  6. Is there a persistent odour that you can trace to the heating and cooling system itself?

    An odour that clearly strengthens when the system runs and at the registers.

  7. Is the main reason you are considering this simply that several years have passed?

    A calendar interval, a mailer, or a phone call rather than an observed condition.

Why moisture outranks every other answer

Moisture is checked first because cleaning contaminated ductwork without correcting the water source means the contamination returns. Everything below it follows the three conditions the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies.

The tool weights one question above the rest. If the duct system has been wet, or there is an unresolved condensation, humidity, or water-intrusion problem, that outranks everything — including a genuine case of visible growth inside the ducts.

The reason is mechanical, not editorial. Cleaning removes what has already accumulated. It does not remove the water that allowed it to accumulate. EPA makes this the condition attached to all of its cleaning guidance: unless the underlying cause is corrected, the problem will recur. Pay for a cleaning while the water source is still active and you have bought a temporary appearance.

Three specifics are worth knowing before you spend anything:

  • Condensation on cooling coils is a major factor in moisture contamination, in EPA’s account. That points attention at the evaporator coil and its drain pan — inside the air handler, not out in the duct runs.
  • Wet or moldy insulated duct cannot be effectively cleaned. EPA’s guidance is that it should be removed and replaced. If a contractor proposes to clean fiberglass duct liner that has been wet, that proposal does not match the published guidance.
  • Once fiberglass duct liner is contaminated with mold, cleaning is not sufficient to prevent regrowth. This is why the duct material in your house changes what the right answer is.

A moisture problem may not be a duct problem at all. Drainage, humidity control, a building-envelope leak, or a failing condensate drain are all upstream of the ductwork. Find the water first.

The three conditions EPA identifies

These are the only conditions in EPA’s consumer guidance under which duct cleaning should be considered. Everything else in the tool exists to work out whether one of them applies.

If you can see mould-like growth, pests, or debris blowing from registers

You have described a condition that professional cleaning is meant to address

Visible mold growth on hard duct surfaces, a pest infestation, or debris actually blowing out of your registers are the three situations the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies as reasons to have ducts cleaned. Get the system inspected in person, and ask the contractor to show you the condition before any work is agreed. Correct whatever caused the problem as well, or it will return.

If there is an unresolved moisture problem

Deal with the moisture problem before you pay anyone to clean ducts

Cleaning removes what has already grown. It does not remove the water that let it grow. If moisture is still reaching the duct system, contamination comes back. Find and fix the moisture source first — that may be a condensation, drainage, humidity, or building-envelope problem rather than a duct problem. If insulated duct material has been wet, EPA advises that it be removed and replaced rather than cleaned.

If the home had major renovation with the system running

Worth an inspection, not an automatic cleaning

What you have described could justify cleaning, but it could also have another cause. A visual inspection of the inside of the ducts is the cheapest way to find out, and it is what EPA recommends as the deciding step. Ask to see inside the system before agreeing to any service.

If the reason is a persistent odour or unexplained dust

Something else is the more likely cause — check that first

Persistent odours and unusual dust levels frequently come from sources other than ductwork: a dirty filter, a failing blower, a wet evaporator coil, an unsealed crawlspace, or a source inside the living space. Duct cleaning is an expensive way to test a theory. Identify the actual source first.

If the only reason is that time has passed

Probably not necessary, based on what you have described

EPA does not recommend routine duct cleaning, only cleaning as needed, and none of the conditions it identifies appear to apply here. Normal settled dust in ducts is not evidence of a problem, and dusty return grilles by themselves are normal. Time since the last cleaning is not on its own a reason to buy the service. If you want reassurance, ask for a visual inspection rather than booking a cleaning.

What a visual inspection is, and how to ask for one

EPA’s answer to “how do I know whether I need this” is not a formula or an interval. It is to look. If an inspection of the interior shows no large deposits of dust or mold, cleaning is probably unnecessary. That single step resolves most of the uncertainty this whole subject generates.

What it involves

Someone opens the system at a return grille, a supply register, or an access panel and examines the interior — usually with a light and a camera on a flexible probe, and usually including the plenum, which is where debris tends to collect. A useful inspection looks past the first two feet of duct. Debris at the register cover tells you about the register cover.

How to ask for it

  • Ask for an inspection, not an estimate. These are different requests. An estimate is a price for work already assumed necessary; an inspection is a question about whether it is.
  • Ask whether it is chargeable, and how much, before the visit. Get that in writing or in a message you keep.
  • Ask to be shown the inside of the system yourself, on the screen, while the technician is there. EPA frames this as your entitlement: you can ask the contractor to show you the contamination they say is present.
  • Ask which parts were examined. Supply runs, return runs, plenum, blower compartment, coil. A report on the ducts that never opened the air handler is a partial report.
  • Ask what a clean result would mean. A contractor who cannot describe an outcome in which you do not buy anything is not really inspecting.

If a contractor tells you something you cannot verify

This is the situation the tool cannot help with, so here is the process.

The industry’s own trade association addresses it directly. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) tells homeowners that being told, without proper inspection, that mold or other dangerous substances are present is a common red flag. That is a trade body warning about its own industry, which makes it worth more than the equivalent warning from us.

What to do, in order:

  1. Ask to see it. On camera, on the screen, in the location it was found. Photograph the screen with your own phone.
  2. Do not agree to anything the same day. Urgency is the pressure mechanism, and there is no condition inside a duct that becomes dramatically worse between Tuesday and Friday.
  3. For a mold claim, ask for laboratory confirmation. Visual identification is not confirmation, according to EPA, and sample confirmation runs about $50 — a small fraction of what the recommended work will cost. A contractor who resists a $50 test before a four-figure job has told you something useful.
  4. Get the finding and the recommendation in writing, separately from the price.
  5. Get a second opinion from someone with no work to sell you — an HVAC technician on a service call, or a home inspector.
  6. Check the claim against the material in your house. If your ducts are fiberglass-lined and the recommendation is an antimicrobial treatment, note that no products are registered by EPA as biocides for use on fiberglass duct board or fiberglass-lined ducts.

On the treatments that get added on site

A small number of products are EPA-registered specifically for use inside bare sheet metal ducts. None are registered for fiberglass duct board or fiberglass-lined duct. Using a general-purpose disinfectant inside an HVAC system whose label does not specifically authorize HVAC use is a use inconsistent with labeling under federal pesticide law. EPA also notes that little research has been done on the effectiveness of most biocides and ozone inside ducts. None of that makes every on-site recommendation improper — but it does mean “we’ll sanitize it while we’re here” deserves a question about what product, and what its label says.

What this tool deliberately does not do

  • It does not diagnose mold. Nothing on this site can. Identification requires examination, and confirmation requires a laboratory.
  • It does not diagnose HVAC faults. A smell, a noise, or poor airflow may indicate a mechanical problem, and that is a question for a technician looking at your equipment.
  • It does not give medical advice. If someone in the home has allergies, asthma, or any symptom you associate with the air in the house, that belongs with a clinician. We do not present duct cleaning as a treatment, because EPA states it has never been shown to prevent health problems — a statement that covers the whole service category, including the most reputable firms in it.
  • It does not sell anything, collect anything, or pass your answers anywhere. The form runs in your browser and stores nothing.

What if I answer no to everything?

Then the honest result is that you probably do not need this service, which is the most common outcome and not a failure of the tool. Normal settled dust is not evidence of a problem, and EPA notes that dusty return grilles by themselves are normal.

Does it matter how long it has been?

Not on its own. Time is not one of EPA’s conditions, and no source in our fact base establishes a service interval. We explain why the familiar three-to-five-year figure does not have the backing people assume.
