Two ducts that have nothing to do with each other
The confusion is almost entirely linguistic. Both services involve a duct, both are performed by people with vacuums and brushes, and both are frequently advertised on the same postcard. Physically they have no relationship.
The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) duct system is a closed loop. Air leaves the air handler through supply ducts, enters rooms, is drawn back through return grilles, passes a filter, crosses the coil, and goes around again. Nothing in that loop is supposed to leave the building.
The dryer exhaust duct is a one-way pipe. Hot, humid air loaded with textile fiber leaves the dryer, travels a short run, and discharges outdoors through a hooded vent. Nothing in it is supposed to come back. The two systems do not connect, do not share air, and do not affect one another. Cleaning one tells you nothing about the state of the other.

What federal agencies publish about clothes dryer fires
Two federal agencies publish national estimates. They are built on overlapping data but use different definitions, years and denominators, so we present them separately and never average them.

A note on the death figure, because it is the one most likely to be misreported. In CPSC’s tables, clothes dryer deaths are printed as an asterisk in two of three years and in the three-year average, because CPSC denotes rounded estimates of fewer than 10 deaths that way. The honest statement is fewer than 10 a year on average, below CPSC’s own reporting threshold. USFA’s separate figure of about 5 deaths a year is for 2008–2010. CPSC also notes its estimates are built on data obtained from USFA and the National Fire Protection Association, so these are not three independent measurements.
The finding that makes cleaning the intervention
USFA’s 2012 topical report on clothes dryer fires in residential buildings, covering 2008 to 2010, contains the sentence this service rests on: failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires, at 34 percent Verified fact. Within the operational-deficiency category alone it accounted for 72 percent of contributing factors, and dust, fiber and lint were the leading items first ignited, at 28 percent.
That report is fourteen years old, and it is the only clothes dryer report USFA publishes. But the finding is not a one-off. USFA’s own appliance and electrical fire safety page, last reviewed May 4, 2023, restates it with newer data: failure to clean at 31 percent for 2018–2020, still the leading contributing factor Verified fact. Two periods, a decade apart, same conclusion.
Two fairness points we are obliged to make
First, most of these fires do not spread. USFA found 54 percent of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings were confined to the object of origin. A dryer fire is a serious event; it is not automatically a house fire.
Second, and more important: no source quantifies how much cleaning a dryer vent reduces fire risk. “Failure to clean is the leading contributing factor” is a cause attribution drawn from fire reports, not a measured effect of cleaning. If anyone quotes you a percentage risk reduction from a dryer vent cleaning, that number does not exist in any source we could find.
What exists on the HVAC side
Nothing comparable. There is no federal fire estimate for dirty HVAC ducts, no injury estimate, no property loss estimate, no leading-contributing-factor finding. EPA states there is no evidence that a light amount of household dust in air ducts poses any risk to health, and that duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. The strongest published statements on the HVAC side are about absence of demonstrated benefit, not presence of documented harm.
The single sharpest data point: what the federal government inspects for
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) inspects a very large share of federally assisted rental housing against a published set of standards known as NSPIRE — the closest thing to a federal answer to what counts as a housing defect. They settle this comparison without our having to argue it.
The NSPIRE standard for clothes dryer exhaust ventilation, version 3.0 dated June 20, 2023, defines six deficiencies. Five of them are classified life-threatening with a 24-hour correction window:
- Electric dryer transition duct detached or missing — with inspectors told to observe whether dryer lint has accumulated.
- Gas dryer transition duct detached or missing, with misaligned ducting counted as detached.
- Electric dryer exhaust system blocked or damaged such that airflow may be restricted — and improvised filter materials such as stockings or t-shirts attached to the duct line count as a blockage.
- Gas dryer exhaust system blocked or damaged such that airflow may be restricted.
- Dryer transition duct not constructed of metal or an approved material.
The sixth, a missing exterior vent cover or cap, is rated low severity with 60 days to correct.
Now the other side. The NSPIRE HVAC standard, version 3.0 dated August 11, 2023, defines nine deficiencies: no heat or heat below 64°F, non-operational air conditioning, unvented fuel-burning space heaters, missing combustion chamber covers or gas shutoff valves, damaged heating safety shields, damaged or missing permanently installed heating sources, and misaligned, blocked, disconnected or damaged fuel-burning exhaust vents. Not one concerns dirt, dust, debris or contamination inside supply or return ductwork. The companion Ventilation standard defines four deficiencies about kitchen and bathroom exhaust performance, all moderate with 30 days to correct.
Read that as a whole
Inside one federal inspection standard set: five life-threatening, 24-hour-correction deficiencies for the clothes dryer exhaust duct, and no deficiency anywhere for a dirty heating or cooling duct. That is not our opinion about relative risk. It is the protocol the federal government actually uses when it inspects housing.
Why the lint screen is not enough
The obvious objection to paying for dryer vent cleaning is that you already clean the lint screen. CPSC’s engineers addressed it directly. In a 2011 report from its Directorate for Engineering Sciences, CPSC states that lint may still accumulate inside a dryer even with properly vented exhaust ducting and routine cleaning of the lint screen before each load Verified fact. That is the technical justification for the service: some fraction of fiber escapes the screen and settles in the machine and along the exhaust run, particularly at elbows, at the transition duct, and at the exterior hood where a flapper can stick.
The same CPSC testing showed what a restricted exhaust does: dryers cycled on the high-limit thermostat when the exhaust vent was 75 or 100 percent blocked, and temperatures near the heating element increased significantly. That is the mechanism connecting a lint-packed duct to an ignition source, and it is measured rather than inferred.
How many people actually do it? A small CPSC consumer panel survey in September 2010 found about 96 percent of respondents had cleaned the lint filter at some point and 68 percent did so every load — but only 38 percent had ever cleaned the dryer ducts Single source. That survey had 358 respondents from a self-selected online panel with a 16.5 percent response rate, so it is not a national statistic. It does describe the gap this service fills: nearly everyone does the easy step, well under half have ever done the harder one.
How often, honestly
Here the two services converge on the same awkward answer: the authorities decline to give a number.

Two traps to avoid. USFA’s report advises cleaning the lint filter with a nylon brush at least every six months — that is the filter screen, not the duct, and it gets repackaged as a duct interval constantly. And a document hosted on energy.gov saying venting systems should be cleaned at least once a year is a reprint of a 2003 Home Energy magazine article, not a Department of Energy recommendation.
Everything else on frequency is unpublished. What CPSC and USFA do give you is a free check: run the dryer, walk outside, and confirm air is coming out of the hood and the flapper is opening. If it is not, you have your answer without paying anyone.
How the two get sold together
Hardly anyone buys these services from two different companies, and that is the practical trap. The bundling runs in both directions, and the second direction is the one worth watching.
The duct cleaning visit adds a dryer vent. The crew is already at your house with the equipment out, and adding a dryer vent for a reduced fee is ordinary commerce — roughly $100 to $200 standalone against about $40 to $100 as an add-on Typical range. That is one of the better-supported price patterns in the whole cost corpus. Say plainly what the evidence says here: the dryer vent is the half with the federal fire data behind it, and the half HUD treats as a life-threatening defect in assisted housing. It is frequently the most defensible line on the invoice. Bundling is not the problem, and refusing an add-on on principle is not sophistication.
The cheap dryer vent special opens the door. The same arithmetic works in reverse, and this is where scope and price stop being obvious. We should be honest about what we can and cannot show: we found no enforcement action built on a dryer-vent coupon specifically. What is documented is the structure. New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs described whole-house duct cleaning coupons at $37.95 to $69.95 used, in the state’s words, to bait the buyer into purchasing higher-priced services
Verified fact. In Washington State’s case, specials advertised as low as $29 produced charges that often exceeded $1,000 Verified fact. The coupon is the entry mechanism; which of the two services is printed on it is a detail, and the dryer vent makes a plausible coupon precisely because the safety case for it is genuine.
So the objection is not to bundling. It is to a single number covering two unrelated systems, and the itemization rules that apply to duct cleaning apply here unchanged.
- Price each service as its own line before work starts, not as a discovery midway through. One bundled figure cannot be compared against anything, and it hides which half moved when the total grew.
- Ask what the dryer vent job includes. The transition duct behind the appliance, the full run, and the exterior hood are three separate things, and the hood is where blockages are most visible.
- Do not accept a finding on one system as evidence about the other. They are unconnected. A lint-packed exhaust says nothing about the state of your supply runs, and a dusty return grille says nothing about the dryer.

What we will not publish
One widely circulated set of dryer fire statistics is deliberately absent here. A trade association blog attributes to the National Fire Protection Association a figure of nearly 16,000 home structural fires a year involving clothes dryers or washing machines, with percentage breakdowns. We could not verify any of it at source — NFPA’s research documents are disallowed by its own robots.txt — and the headline counts a different denominator from the CPSC and USFA figures above. Until we can read the underlying report we publish none of it, even though it would make this page’s case look stronger.
We also publish no risk-reduction percentage for cleaning and no cost figure from any agency, because none exists. The pricing above comes from the consumer cost-guide corpus.
Common misconceptions
“Cleaning the ducts includes the dryer vent”
Only if the contract says so, and it usually says so as a separately priced item. They are different ducts requiring different access. Read the scope line rather than assuming.
“If the dryer vent needed cleaning, the air ducts must too”
There is no connection. Lint accumulates in the dryer exhaust because a dryer produces lint and pushes it down a narrow pipe. HVAC ducts do not carry lint from the laundry, and nothing in our fact base links the condition of one to the other.
“CPSC recommends annual dryer vent cleaning”
It does not. CPSC says periodically. The annual figure is NADCA’s. Massachusetts is the only government fire authority we found giving an interval, and it says twice a year for the outside vents.
“A duct cleaning is the safety service and the dryer vent is the extra”
Backwards, on the published evidence. The dryer vent is the one HUD treats as a life-threatening defect in assisted housing. The HVAC duct is the one no federal inspection standard looks at.

Which should I buy if I can only buy one?
The dryer vent, unless you have one of EPA’s three conditions in your HVAC ducts — substantial visible mold on hard duct surfaces, vermin infestation, or debris being released into rooms from the registers. Absent those, the dryer vent is the purchase with evidence behind it.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
CPSC’s own guidance describes homeowner-level steps: clean the lint screen before or after every load, clean behind the dryer where lint builds up, check the outside vent while the dryer runs, and disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer if there is a blockage in the path. CPSC separately advises having a qualified service person clean the dryer chassis interior periodically, and replacing plastic or foil accordion-type ducting with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct.
Who is responsible in an apartment building?
Nothing in our fact base assigns cleaning responsibility to a landlord or an association. What we can say is that Massachusetts notes commercial dryers should be cleaned regularly because of frequent use and shared venting, and HUD treats a blocked or detached dryer exhaust duct in assisted housing as a life-threatening defect.
